LIFT LIFT A Feature Documentary in progress

About

As a fine art, American ballet rarely finds its dancers or audience among those marginalized by a lack of privilege or homelessness, but for over 25 years a small ballet company in New York City has held auditions in homeless shelters and low income communities to teach dancers the commitment and devotion to become fine artists, either for themselves, for the ballet company, or to pursue international careers well beyond what they could have imagined. This journey, from the marginalized community of homelessness to the rigor of a professional ballet dancer, drives a powerful story of empowerment for these children. Through the choreography and guidance of Steven Melendez, an international dancer who began his career in a homeless shelter, three children embrace the discipline, passion, and beauty of classical ballet and make this art form their own by contributing gestures and movement to their story of stepping from the shelter to the New York stage.
